Quick answer: Most people moving abroad use around 15GB to 35GB of mobile data a month while they settle in. A data usage calculator built for relocation counts the extra maps, document uploads and video calls of your first weeks, when your phone does the work that home Wi-Fi normally would. For comparison, the average smartphone in North America used 25GB a month in 2025, according to the Ericsson Mobility Report.
Moving abroad is something that every international student plans for months, from the visa to the first rent payment. However, the phone plan is usually sorted out last. Most online data calculators also assume that you are sitting at home on stable Wi-Fi, which is not the case in your first week in a new country. That is when your phone books the airport cab, pulls up your immigration papers and finds the way to campus. It is also when there is no home broadband to fall back on.
One might assume that the safest choice is to sign up with a big local carrier on arrival. But this is not the case. Relocators usually end up overspending on a long-term carrier contract from day one, or they depend on a small tourist plan or international roaming from home and run out of data within the first week.
Home internet is rarely ready on the day you land in the USA, the UK or Canada. You first need an address, a signed lease and an installation slot with a provider, and only then does your broadband go live. Until that happens, your mobile data carries your entire digital life, from laptop tethering to university portals and remote work.
These are the tasks that use the most data in week one:
Real-time GPS mapping: Google Maps or Citymapper running for hours while you learn your way around the city.
Document uploads: Identity, visa and housing documents sent to landlords, banks and your university.
Video calls home: Long calls with family, which use far more data than a voice call.
Please note that mobile speeds also differ from country to country, which is why the same task can feel slower on arrival than it did at home. Ookla's Speedtest Global Index lets you compare median mobile speeds in your destination before you fly.
How much data you need depends on why you are moving. The ranges below are estimates for your first months abroad, so it is advised to treat them as a starting point rather than a fixed rule.
Main uses: University portals, PDF downloads, hybrid Zoom or Teams lectures, cloud storage and campus networking.
Estimated monthly data: 15GB to 25GB, assuming campus Wi-Fi covers part of your day.
The smart approach: Set up a student phone plan with pre-arrival mobile data before you board, instead of buying an expensive tourist eSIM or signing up at a campus booth.
Unlimit Mobile lets students get a local number and data plan from their home country, with no local credit history, local ID, local address, local credit card or local bank account needed. You can compare our plans for [the USA, Canada and the UK before you fly.
Main uses: Navigation, ridesharing apps, government verification such as your SIN (Social Insurance Number) or visa documents, banking app setup and job hunting.
Estimated monthly data: [15GB] to 40GB, since home Wi-Fi is usually missing in week one.
Main uses: Laptop hotspot tethering, several devices at once, long video conferences and travel across borders.
Estimated monthly data: [25GB] to 50GB or more, because of heavy hotspot use.
Digital activity | Approximate data used |
1 hour of HD video streaming | Up to 3GB |
1 hour of Zoom video call | About 1GB at 720p, up to 3GB at 1080p |
1 hour of continuous GPS navigation | 10MB to 20MB |
1 hour of web browsing and social media | 60MB to 100MB |
Uploading a bundle of 10 documents or PDFs | 50MB to 150MB |
1 hour of laptop hotspot use (email and web) | 300MB to 500MB |
The streaming figure comes from Netflix's help centre, and the Zoom figure is worked out from Zoom's recommended bandwidth. The rest are typical estimates, which means your own usage may be higher or lower.
In simple terms, multiply the data each activity uses by the hours you spend on it each day, and then multiply the total by 30.
Take a scenario where a student uses mobile data for an hour of maps, two hours of browsing and social media, and a 30-minute video call home at 720p every day. In this case, the daily total is about 15MB + 160MB + 500MB, or roughly 0.7GB. Over 30 days, this comes to around 20GB, which sits inside the student range above. Please note that the same calls made on campus or home Wi-Fi would not count towards your mobile data at all.
Traditional carriers in your destination country often ask for a local credit history, proof of address or a long commitment, which a newcomer simply does not have on day one. Bell/Rogers], for example, no longer offers prepaid plans for new activations, and lists its 100GB Select plan at [CAD 85 a month (without autopay) and also charges activation fee.
In the USA, AT&T lists its Premium 2.0 plan from USD 100 a month for a single line before discounts, and Verizon's Unlimited Ultimate plan costs USD 105 a month without AutoPay, with taxes and fees extra on both. Unlimit Mobile's 12-month USA plan with unlimited data (including 50GB of premium high-speed data) and unlimited talk and text costs USD 432, which works out to USD 36 a month. This means you save about USD 768 compared with a year on AT&T's Premium 2.0 plan, or about USD 64 less per month, and about USD 828 compared with Verizon's Unlimited Ultimate, or about USD 69 less per month. The plan runs on the T-Mobile 5G network.
A newcomer SIM card from an airport kiosk requires the contract. Hence, it is advised to look for a contract-free plan that you can activate instantly instead. Unlimit Mobile's 12-month Canada plan with 120 GB Data Unlimited Talk and Text costs CAD 564, which works out to about CAD 47 a month. This means you get 20% extra data and save over CAD 336 less than Bell's Select plan, or about CAD 28 less per month. Additionally, the plan runs on the Telus 5G+ network, needs no credit check, no local address, No local ID, local credit card or local bank account and can be activated before you fly, as long as your phone appears on our device compatibility list.
In the UK, O2's 12-month Unlimited SIM-only plan costs GBP 35 a month, and EE's 24-month unlimited SIM-only plans cost up to GBP 33 a month, both with a credit check and a fixed price rise each spring. Unlimit Mobile's 12-month UK plan with 100GB of data and unlimited talk and text costs GBP 225, which works out to about GBP 18.75 a month. This means you save about GBP 195 compared with O2's 12-month Unlimited plan, or about GBP 16 less per month, and about GBP 171 compared with a year on EE at GBP 33 a month, or about GBP 14 less per month. The plan runs on the Vodafone 5G network.
In all three countries, Unlimit Mobile's plans need no SSN, local ID, local address, local credit card, local bank account or credit history, and parents can pay from India using UPI, an Indian debit card or a bank transfer. You can also suspend your plan for a small fee while you are back home (about USD 8–10 in the USA). Buying, top-ups, renewals, checking usage, changing plans and suspension can all be done in the simple, easy-to-use Unlimit Mobile app, which also gives you 24x7 support via chatbot, email and WhatsApp.
Unlimit Mobile also adds free perks that lower the effective price further. Referrals, group purchases and partner services all earn you Unlimit Coins, which you can use to pay for top-ups and renewals. You earn coins worth USD 10, 25 or 45 in the USA, and GBP 10, 25 or 45 in the UK, for every friend who buys a 3-, 6- or 12-month plan, and a group of five friends buying together pays just 50% of the price for the first month. In Canada, opening an account with partners such as ICICI Bank Canada and BMO earns Unlimit Coins worth CAD 60 to 120, and coins can cover up to 50% of your monthly bill. You can refer friends and redeem your Unlimit Coins in the same app.
It is evident that your first 30 days abroad need more data than a calculator built for home use will ever show. If your plan is in place before you board, you land with a local number and enough data for the weeks when your phone does everything. With Unlimit Coins on top, your yearly cost can drop even further. Get your Unlimit Mobile plan before you fly!
