Choosing a US phone plan is something that every international student must do before the first week of classes. However, two providers that often come up, Unlimit Mobile and US Mobile, are built for quite different customers. In simple terms, US Mobile is a low-cost carrier with a choice of networks for people already in the USA, whereas Unlimit Mobile is built for students who want a working US number before they arrive.
Unlimit Mobile is a prepaid mobile service for international students in the USA, Canada and the UK. Its US plans run on the T-Mobile 5G network, come with a US number and can be bought and installed from your home country. You do not need an SSN (Social Security Number), US ID, US address, US credit card, or credit history.
US Mobile is a US prepaid carrier that lets customers choose between three networks: Warp (Verizon), Light Speed (T-Mobile) and Dark Star (AT&T). Its plans suit customers who are already in the USA and want low monthly prices, along with extras such as international roaming.
Unlimit Mobile sells 3-, 6- and 12-month prepaid plans, paid upfront. The 12-month US plan costs USD 432, which works out to USD 36 a month, and includes unlimited data (with 50GB of premium high-speed data) along with unlimited talk and text. Our US plan page also states a five-year rate lock on the 12-month plan, which means the renewal price stays the same. Additionally, you earn Unlimit Coins worth USD 10, 25 or 45 for every friend who buys a 3-, 6- or 12-month plan, and you can use them towards renewals.
US Mobile's Unlimited Starter plan costs USD 25 a month, with unlimited high-speed data and 20GB of hotspot on Dark Star. Its Unlimited Premium plan costs USD 44 a month, with unlimited priority data and unlimited hotspot on Dark Star, according to its plans page . Both prices include taxes and fees, and over 12 months they come to about USD 300 and USD 528 respectively. Please note that US Mobile's lower six-month promotional prices are for customers who move an existing US number, which a new arrival will not have.
One might assume that the cheapest monthly price is all that matters. But this is not the case for a student who has not yet landed, since the plan also must work without US documents. Either way, both providers cost far less than the big carriers. AT&T's Premium 2.0 plan, for example, is listed from USD 100 a month, so Unlimit Mobile's 12-month plan saves about USD 768 a year.
Unlimit Mobile runs on T-Mobile's 5G network, with 4G LTE where 5G is not available. Since speeds vary by location, it is advised to check our coverage map for your campus, housing and daily commute.
US Mobile lets you choose Warp (Verizon), Light Speed (T-Mobile) or Dark Star (AT&T), and switch if one network is weak where you live. Its multi-network add-on, at USD 10 a month per line, also lets one line use more than one network. This means that US Mobile offers more network choice, which matters most in small towns or rural areas where one carrier is clearly stronger than the others.
Both providers need an unlocked phone, which you can confirm on ours device compatibility page . With Unlimit Mobile, you complete a quick digital ID check at checkout, receive a QR code by email, and install the eSIM at home, so your US number is ready before you fly. Since it is a local plan, you only need to switch it on and set it as your primary SIM after landing. US Mobile supports eSIM as well. However, its international help page states that a line must first be used in the USA, since roaming does not work if the line is activated abroad.
Both providers also offer physical SIM cards for phones that do not support eSIM. Please note that a physical SIM must be shipped, so it is advised to order early and check where each provider can deliver.
Both providers include unlimited talk and text within the USA, so the real difference lies in high-speed data and hotspot. Unlimit Mobile's 12-month plan includes 50GB of premium high-speed data, and hotspot works on compatible phones. US Mobile's Unlimited Starter includes unlimited high-speed data with 20GB of hotspot on Dark Star, whereas Unlimited Premium adds priority data and unlimited hotspot on Dark Star. Hence, a student who tethers a laptop for hours every day will get more out of the US Mobile Premium.
Unlimit Mobile's US plans are local plans, so they do not include roaming. However, they support Wi-Fi calling from outside the USA at a very low cost. Additionally, you can suspend your plan for a small fee of about USD 8–10 while you are back home and keep the same US number, rather than paying for the full plan.
US Mobile, on the other hand, includes roaming in Unlimited Premium, with 20GB of data, 200 minutes and 250 texts across up to 180+ destinations, depending on the network. Unlimited Starter includes 1GB, 200 minutes, and 250 texts, but only with annual billing. For other plans, roaming add-ons cost USD 15 for 1GB, 150 minutes and 150 texts, or USD 30 for 5GB, 500 minutes and 500 texts.
Pros: A US number before you fly, with no SSN, US address, US card or credit history needed. Parents can pay from India using UPI, an Indian debit card or a bank transfer. You can also suspend the plan during trips home, and the app gives you 24x7 support through chatbot, email and WhatsApp.
Cons: It runs on one network (T-Mobile). the 12-month plan is paid upfront, and roaming is not included.
Pros: A choice of three networks, low monthly prices with taxes and fees included, and unlimited hotspot and roaming on Premium.
Cons: Its best promotional prices are for customers who move an existing US number, and roaming does not work if a line is activated outside the USA.
Unlimit Mobile is usually the better fit. Take a scenario where you are in India two weeks before your flight to Boston. In this case, you can buy a 12-month plan, let your parents pay by UPI, install the eSIM and share your US number with your university before you leave.
For newcomers settling in for a year or more, Unlimit Mobile is the easier start, since it needs no US documents. However, someone who already has a US number and travels abroad often may prefer US Mobile Premium for its included roaming.
US Mobile Unlimited Premium suits heavy users, as it offers priority data and unlimited hotspot on Dark Star. Please note that most students use campus and home Wi-Fi for much of the day, so 50GB of high-speed data covers typical use.
It is evident that the better provider depends on where you are when you buy. If you are still at home and need a US number that works from the day you land, explore Unlimit Mobile's US plans before you fly!
