A mobile plan is something that every international student pays for every month, along with rent, food and travel. However, it is also one of the easiest costs to overpay, since most students pick a plan in a hurry after landing. If you are moving to the USA, the UK or Canada, the right plan can save you hundreds over a year, which is money that can go towards books or your next trip home.
How much you spend depends mostly on how much mobile data you use. An hour of HD streaming can use up to 3GB, according to Netflix , and an hour-long video call at 720p uses about 1GB. Social media and browsing use far less, at roughly 60MB to 100MB an hour.
Please note that most students spend a large part of the day on university and dorm Wi-Fi, which does not count towards mobile data. Hence, it is advised to estimate your monthly usage before you choose a plan. Our data usage calculator guide explains how to work it out.
A postpaid plan bills you after you use the service, and it often comes with a credit check and a contract of one or two years. A prepaid plan, on the other hand, is paid upfront, which means there is no bill shock and usually no credit check. Since most new students have no local credit history, prepaid is often the only realistic option, and it also helps you stay within a fixed budget.
An eSIM is downloaded to your phone by scanning a QR code, whereas a physical SIM is a card that has to be shipped or collected. The plan price is usually the same for both. However, an eSIM can be installed before you travel, while a physical SIM works in older phones that do not support eSIM. Either way, your phone must be unlocked, which means it is not tied to your home carrier. Our guide to comparing eSIM plans covers this in more detail.
One might assume that keeping your home number on roaming is the simplest choice. But this is not the case for a long stay, since roaming packs are priced for short trips, and the daily charges add up over a semester. A local plan gives you a local number, local rates and full data allowance, which is why it is almost always cheaper for students staying more than a few weeks.
Before you fly, check your home operator's roaming rates, since a few days of roaming can cost more than a month on a local plan. Once you land, turn off data roaming on your home SIM if you only need it for bank OTPs (one-time passwords) and texts. Additionally, it is advised to use Wi-Fi wherever you can, download offline maps, and switch off background data for apps that you do not need on the go.
When you compare plans, look at the total cost rather than the monthly price alone. This means adding activation fees, SIM charges, taxes, and the cost of top-ups if you run out of data. Please note that unused data on many prepaid plans does not roll over, so paying more than you use is money lost.
Unlimited data may not be necessary either. Ofcom points out that unlimited plans often cost more than people need, and that a set allowance can be better value. For most students who use campus Wi-Fi, a plan with a fixed amount of high-speed data is enough.
A short exchange of a few weeks needs a short plan, whereas a semester or a full academic year suits a 3-, 6- or 12-month plan. Longer plans paid upfront usually have a lower monthly rate. However, it is important to check the renewal price, the cancellation terms, and whether the price can rise during the contract. In Canada, for example, the CRTC's Wireless Code gives you a trial period of at least 15 days on contracts that carry an early cancellation fee.
University, library and accommodation Wi-Fi can carry most of your heavy use, such as lectures, streaming and large downloads. Download study materials and maps before you leave campus and make calls home through internet-based apps such as WhatsApp on Wi-Fi. If you use your phone as a hotspot for your laptop, keep it to short sessions, since a laptop uses far more data than a phone.
Prepaid plans are the easiest way to save in the USA, since many postpaid plans need a credit check and an SSN (Social Security Number). Watch for activation fees, taxes and AutoPay conditions, and check coverage on your campus. AT&T, for example, lists its Premium 2.0 plan from USD 100 a month, whereas Unlimit Mobile's 12-month US plan costs USD 432 for the year, with unlimited data (including 50GB of high-speed data), calls and texts. This means you save about USD 768 a year.
In Canada, look at the monthly cost against the data you actually get, and prefer plans built for long stays. Bell lists its 100GB Select plan at CAD 85 a month without Autopay, plus an activation fee, which comes to CAD 1,020 a year. Unlimit Mobile's 12-month Canada plan with 120GB of data, calls and texts costs CAD 564, which means you save about CAD 456 a year. Additionally, the CRTC caps data overage charges at CAD 50 a month unless you agree to pay more.
In the UK, a SIM-only plan is usually the best value if you already have a phone, as Ofcom explains. However, many SIM-only deals run for 12 or 24 months and need a credit check. O2's 12-month Unlimited SIM-only plan, for example, costs GBP 35 a month with a fixed price rise each spring, whereas Unlimit Mobile's 12-month UK plan with 100GB of data costs GBP 225 for the year, a saving of about GBP 195.
For most students, it is, as long as the phone supports eSIM. You can install it at home before you fly, which means you skip airport SIM counters and the first days of expensive roaming. Please note that the eSIM itself is only how the plan reaches your phone, so the savings come from the plan you choose.
Take a scenario where you are in India a week before your flight. In this case, you can buy an Unlimit Mobile plan for the USA , Canada or the UK , and your parents can pay using UPI, an Indian debit card or a bank transfer. Unlimit Mobile does not ask for an SSN, local ID, local address, local credit card, or credit history. Since these are local plans and not roaming plans, you only need to switch the eSIM on after you land. You can also suspend your plan for a small fee while you are back home and earn Unlimit Coins through referrals to pay for renewals. Before you buy, check your phone on our device compatibility page .
